Dear Seventh Grade Students and Parents:

Let me begin by welcoming you to your seventh grade year! I am so looking forward to welcoming you back in the fall as your homeroom teacher. I know we’ll have a wonderful year together.

I hope you enjoy your summer vacation: get some rest, have plenty of fun, and, of course, read, read, read! To help you get started, I ask that you read at least two of the books from the summer reading list on the back of this page. Please choose two books that you have not previously read. For one of the books you have chosen, you will need to write a letter to me and actually mail it to school! Your one-page typewritten (or one and a half pages handwritten) letter should include the following:
  • The title and author of the book, a description of one or two of the main characters, the setting, and a summary of the story.
  • Your personal rating of the book, from 1-10, with 10 being the highest, plus your reasons for the rating. Please focus more on this part of your letter; I really want to know whether or not you enjoyed the book!

For your other book, I would like you to illustrate your favorite scene from the novel (not the one on the cover of the book, please). On the back of the illustration please include the following information in two to three paragraphs:
  • Title and author
  • Describe the main characters
  • Provide a short summary of the story
  • Your personal rating of the book, from 1-10, with 10 being the highest, plus your reasons for the rating.

Please have your letter and illustration in the mail to me no later than August 20, 2008. This is your first assignment for the 2008-2009 school year! Send it to:
